Legitimate Ways to Make Money at Home - 3 Steps to Choosing a Home Business By Elaine Currie Platinum Quality Author

Legitimate ways to make money at home are not hard to find; the hard part is picking the money making opportunity that will suit you best. If you start looking on the internet for legitimate ways to make money at home, you will find yourself in a world full of gurus and advisors who are all anxious to pitch in with advice and their own recommendations.

All those gurus know more about making money at home than you do, so who is the best person to identify the most suitable way for you to make money at home? Well, actually it's you, but before you rush off and make a final decision, take the following three steps.

Step 1 - Think About Your Skills

Consider what skills or talents you already possess that could make the foundation of a home based career. If you are qualified in a particular field, do you want to continue in that area or are you looking for a complete change of direction in your working life? Would you need to spend time and money on retraining?

You don't necessarily need special skills or talents to start your own business; your character is also important when considering your future working life. For instance if you are an expert typist, you might be suited to working at home as a virtual secretary. If you are a compassionate person with good listening skills, retraining to become a counsellor might be the answer for you.

Step 2 - Identify Your Potential Market

Think about the people who would be your customers, and where they are located. Do they exist in sufficient number to form a customer base large enough to bring in the profit you need to make your business viable? This step is absolutely crucial; you could be the best in your chosen field but if there are insufficient people looking for your product or service, you have no hope of building a viable business.

When considering your market, you need to research the current level of competition you would face when you are trying to get your new business up and running. Competition can be healthy; the fact that other people are in business in your chosen market is a good indicator that there is a demand for your product or service.

Step 3 - Ask Yourself The Big Question

"Would I be happy doing this?" The answer to this question is more important when choosing a home based business than the answer to the other big question: "Can I make enough money doing this?" and it is a step you must not skip. If you choose a home business purely on the basis that you believe it would be profitable, you could be sentencing yourself to a thoroughly miserable time. Choose an honest way to make money that would make you happy, and you are far more likely to develop a successful home business.

This is not to say that happiness is the only consideration when looking for ways to make money at home. Obviously the suitability of your skills and the potential market for your business must be considered. The idea is, after all, to make money, not just to make you happy; finding a business that includes both these factors offers your best chance of success.
